Conservatives for Republican Reform

Welcome

Let’s make a difference together. Does the Republican Party’s move to the left have you feeling like you’ve lost your voice? Do you find yourself wondering if it might be time to support a third party? Are you tired of being inspired by the conservatism in the Republican Party platform only to be disappointed with a selection of Republican candidates that don’t take it to heart? If you find yourself saying “Yes!” to these questions then please consider joining with us to make the “Grand Old Party” grand again. We are committed to returning the GOP to conservative principles through specific constructive actions.

"A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers." - Ronald Reagan, 1975
Republican Misadventures

January 27, 2009 - Independent Senator Joe Lieberman (CT) indicated last weekend that he would not rule out running as a Republican in 2012. While it is good to see moderate politician's growing dissatisfaction with the Democrat Party, the Republican leadership needs to  be wary of a RINO stampeded into the GOP.

December 18, 2009 - Republican Sens. Hutchison (TX), Snowe (ME), and Collins (ME) voted to end the filibuster that was delaying action on the Health Care Reform bill in the Senate. Snowe and Collins are no surprise, but Hutchison's principled position of staying in Washington to protect the American Health Care system while she runs for Texas Governor has now been reduced to one more duplicitous act by a self serving politician oblivious to, or disinterested in, the advance of statism on her watch.

December 13, 2009 - Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Thad Cochran of Mississippi and Richard Shelby of Alabama sided with Democrats to break a fillibuster attempt against an omnibus spending bill that would lift the existing ban on directly paying for abortions in the nation's capital. The fillibuster attempt failed by a single vote. The legislation also contained funding for Planned Parenthood and the UNFPA. The same three GOP senators then proceeded to support the bill and ensure passage. Sen Shelby's vote was particularly surprising because Shelby had signed a letter along with 35 other Republicans saying they would filibuster the bill because of the abortion funding.

November 17, 2009 - Dick Cheney endorsed Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison in the race for Governor of Texas. The race for Texas' Governorship leaves conservatives with little in the way of an easy choice and both of the establishment Republican candidates (Rick Perry and Kay Bailey Hutchison) are working frantically to boost their image among Texas conservatives. In a race that could be used to highlight what true conservatism is, comments from Cheney like "When it comes to being conservative, Kay Bailey Hutchison is the real deal." are not helpful.

November 7, 2009 - Republican congressman Anh "Joseph" Cao from Louisiana became the only Republican to vote in support the House Health Care reform bill. Cao provided one of the two votes by which the bill met its margin for passage. Michael Steele and the RNC have not issued any statements regarding Cao's support of what may be the most socialist piece of legislation ever to pass a vote in the US House of Representatives. If you're looking for a teachable moment Michael, that was it.

October 31, 2009 - Newt Gingrich endorsed conservative candidate Doug Hoffman in the NY 23rd district special election for US House of Representatives. Newt's endorsement was preciptated by the the withdrawl from the race of the liberal Republican candidate, Dede Scozzafava, that Newt had previously  endorsed. Newt's endorsement of Scozzafava required redirection when Scozzafava announced support for her liberal Democrat former opponent immediately upon dropping out of the race.

August 17 2009 - Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., wasted little time in raising the possibility of compromise after President Obama gave the impression that his stance on the public option for health care reform may be softening.  With very few details available from the Democrat leadership on the newly raised "co-op" approach Shelby asserted that the Obama team was taking "a step away from the government takeover of the health care system". Shelby went on to say that he doesn't "know if it will do everything people want, but we ought to look at it. I think it's a far cry from the original proposals,".  A better approach might be to assume its a ruse until proven otherwise Senator.

August 6 2009 - Seven Republican Sentors joined with a majority of Democrats to pass the $2-billion "Cash for Clunkers" extension. The list of Republicans voting in favor of the extension bears a striking resemblance to the list of Republicans supporting the Sotomayor confirmation;  Brownback (KS),Collins (ME), Snowe (ME), Bond (MO), Voinovich (OH), Alexander (TN), Corker (TN). Michael Steele has once again taken the opportunity to remain silent regarding the Republican defectors.  Does the RNC have a position on the "Cash for Clunkers" program?

August 6, 2009 - Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed to the Supreme Court of the United States with the support of eight Republican US Senators. The Senators voting to confirm Sotomayor were; Alexander (TN), Snowe (ME), Collins (ME), Lugar (IN), Graham (SC), Martinez (FL), Bond (MO), Voinovich (OH), Gregg (NH).

July 30, 2009 - Lamar Alexander, a Republican senator from Tennessee and the third ranking member of the Republican Senatorial Committee, brought the total number of Republicans supporting Sonia Sotomayor's Supreme Court confirmation to six. The list of Republicans supporting Sotomayor currently includes; Alexander (TN), Snowe (ME), Collins(ME), Graham(SC), Martinez(FL), Lugar(IN).

July 28, 2009 - South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham broke ranks with other Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee to side with Democrats in voting to approve Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court of the United States. Graham's vote today helps pave the way for a full Senate vote next week, where she is expected to receive confirmation.

BBC News reported on Friday July 17th that three Republican senators have declared their support for the appointment of Sonja Sotomayor to the US supreme court.  The three Republican senators endorsing Ms Sotomayor are Richard Lugar, Mel Martinez and Olympia Snowe.  RNC Chairman Michael Steele made no comment regarding the actions of the rogue elephants.

Also on Friday the Miami Herald reported that RINO Florida Governor Charlie Crist declined to take the opportunity to stake out a position on Sotomayor. This opened the door for his Democrat opponent, Kendrick Meek, to provide a lesson on principles "Florida needs a senator who studies the issues of the day and stakes out principled positions rooted in conviction, Our state does not need a fence sitter who is the last person to formulate opinions about issues of profound importance."  RINOs are hard on fences...
Acts of Principle

December 11, 2009 - Michael Steele called for grassroots action against President Obama's proposed health care reform in an appearance at the Mississippi Republican Party Headquarters in Jackson Mississippi. "We need to hold off the greedy grabby hands of the Federal government as they try to take over our health care," Steele said. "We're all asking you to get engaged more than ever. If you don't they will get their way and if they do you won't like it."

October 22, 2009 - Sarah Palin endorsed conservative Doug Hoffman in the US House of Representatives race for the 23rd district of NY. Palin bucked the RNC as they supported liberal Republican Dede Scozzafava. In her endorsement of Hoffman Palin had this to say about the choices made by the RNC; “Unfortunately, the Republican Party today has decided to choose a candidate that more than blurs the lines, and there is no real difference between the Democrat and the Republican in this race. This is why Doug Hoffman is running on the Conservative Party's ticket, Republicans and conservatives around the country are sending an important message to the Republican establishment in their outstanding grassroots support for Doug Hoffman: no more politics as usual.” Principle over Party, that's leadership.

July 24, 2009 - Texas Senator John Cornyn took a principled stand against the confirmation of US Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. Aknowledging the risks associated with offending his hispanic constituents Cornyn had this to say; "Voting to confirm a judge - this judge or any judge - despite doubts would certainly be the politically expedient thing to do, but I don't believe it would be the right thing to do," Texans eagerly await the  the announcement expected next week from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Time will tell which column Senator Hutchinson will be in next week.

July 23, 2009 - Texas Governor Rick Perry took a stand opposing President Obama's health care reform plans on the Mark Davis radio talk show. "I think you’ll hear states and governors standing up and saying 'no’ to this type of encroachment on the states with their healthcare," Perry said. "So my hope is that we never have to have that stand-up. But I’m certainly willing and ready for the fight if this administration continues to try to force their very expansive government philosophy down our collective throats."

Thankfully Michael Steele was able to find his voice when asked at a July 20 National Press club meeting if Obama's plan for health care reform represented socialism. He responded to the question with; "Yes, next question."  See how easy it is?
